The Teachers

Giedre’s journey into the world of swing dance began with Lindy Hop back in early 2000. After traveling around the world learning and teaching swing dance Giedre established her base in Europe’s party capital, Berlin, where she became an active member of a vibrant Balboa dance community. An educator by nature and a historian by the degree, Giedre is currently researching women’s role in early Jazz music and dance history. In her classes one should expect a fair amount of musicality, fun technical tips and lots of good ideas on improvisation for both leaders and followers.

Camille is a contemporary dancer and choreographer. He teaches Balboa from his experience of body awareness, movement experimentation and improvisation. Expect a less conventional approach to learning couple dance, with balance and visualisation techniques, emphasising understanding your own body to open your connection to the ground, to your partner and to the music.

The Classes

For Balboa-newcomers
We have one track especially designed for you. In two 1:20 h-classes on Saturday and Sunday, each from 11:00 to 12:20, this track will get you on the way to dancing relaxed at all parties.

You have (recently) started your Balboa-journey and are eager to learn more. Ideally, you are familiar with the basics of up- and downhold and some basic open shapes (out&ins, lollies, toss-outs).

You are already dancing Lindy Hop or another couple dance and are curious about Balboa? If you are a fast learner, this level could be the right place for you, too!

Note: The beginner level can only be booked as a package of two classes. Therefore, it costs 50 € in total.

For dancers at intermediate level and beyond
In this workshop we have a total of four interesting topics for you to choose from. You can pick as many as you like. Each topic consists of a class of 1:20 h.

And here are the exciting topics Giedre and Camille have to offer you:

• Topic 1: Playing with the cross lateral and the parallel – Saturday, 13:00-14:20
  Cross lateral vs. parallel, a rotational or locked relationship between hips and chest – we will develop an awareness of these two central ways of moving in Balboa and apply it to the basics of Pure Bal. This class offers a deeper understanding on how to dance beloved classic moves like the pivots.
• Topic 2: Finding your inner groove and musicality – Saturday, 14:40-16:00
  This is a two-part balboa based experiment, created for dancers, who want to strengthen their individual voice to become a more empathetic dancer in partnership. We will focus on breathing and inner groove, musicality for your partner, drawing in space with our bodies and centres.
• Topic 3: OUT and IN medley – Sunday, 13:00-14:20
  OUT and IN medley into our favorite arm pass: we want to play with different forms of “out and ins” and see the different connection and momentum they offer. This bal-swing class gives a great opportunity to refresh many classic shapes for social dancing.
• Topic 4: Gilmore Stadium Flavour – Sunday, 14:40-16:00
  We fell in love with this recently rediscovered gem of balboa styling from the Gilmore Stadium clip. We invite you to study spicy swivels variations, spins and turns from the original LA dancers of the era.

The Parties

Friday night’s party will start with a beginner-friendly Balboa Taster Class by Giedre and Camille at 20h and party from 21h onwards. The Saturday party will start at 21h.

DJ Fuüuß known from Rotbart Balboa Swing Club in Berlin and your local DJ team will provide the necessary tunes for your uptempo dance desires.

The Prices

One class (1:20 h) costs 30 €. If you book more than one topic, each topic only costs 25 €.

Note: This only applies when you book several topics with the same dance partner or solo.
